New artist in proarte gallery - Looney

From 01 September the proarte gallery in Hotel Rezydent, Sopot, will be showing the works of the Tri-City graffiti art pioneer, Mark LOONEY Rybowski. The artist, apart from street art, also paints canvases using acrylics, spray paint, stencils and marker pens. His work can be seen primarily on the streets but also at individual and group exhibitions both in Poland and abroad.
Marek LOONEY Rybowski graduated from the Department of Painting and Graphic Art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk and has been painting since 1995. He is the founder of the first Tri-City group of graffiti artists, the DSC, and is a member of the legendary group EWC. He was also the organiser of the national graffiti exhibition held in Gdańsk in 1998.
His work has been published by the following magazines: Dos Dedos, Concrete Magazine, Brain Damage, Uwaga, Liderzy, Ślizg and Visual Communication.
Looney’s pictures depict people and the world of street art; a participant in an American parade, an Afro-American skateboarder, hip-hoppers or a Cuban dancer. His work shows a strong influence of the aesthetics of street art and graffiti – he paints laconically and boldly, rejecting superfluous background and decoration, concentrating instead on the “pictograms” of the street artist. Sometimes (in the spirit of simultaneism) he introduces dynamic elements into his work, simulating movement in his pictures (Cubana Mamma) or painting the figure “falling outside” the confines of the canvas (Dancing).
